Modern Prayer (feat. William Good)

This song features our Father William Good singing and old Bone Game song mixed into our Prayer song. As women we pray to Siem, asking to have our prayers heard with the Bone Game component being our gamble for the future. We cry to Siem to have our prayers heard and to have light sent to save us in this time of darkness and these uncertain times. It is performed in English and Hul’q’umi’num language (Coast Salish from Snuneymuxw). Produced by Rob the Viking.

ABOUT OUR MUSIC

Ay Lelum is a second generation Coast Salish Design House and Recording Artist from Nanaimo, B.C.. Sisters, Aunalee and Sophia, record music in Hul'q'umi'num language and English as part of the design process for each collection, capturing the essence of Coast Salish culture through art, language, music and wearable art garments. They feature Traditional Coast Salish Art by their Father William Good and Brother Joel Good from the Snuneymuxw First Nation in each collection, making it a modern form of story-telling. Their music is inspired by cultural teachings, stories, songs and artwork taught by their Father, where they feature him while following strict cultural protocols. Each song has a unique attribute, like having a family member participate, using traditional instruments, and non-conventional instruments like the sound of carving wood, wool strands or spinning wool incorporated into the beats by Rob the Viking. They combine ancient and traditional art forms with modern garments and beats, while designing their collections for the runway in conjunction with each song.

Our music parallels the stories in the Yuxwule’ Sul'sul'tun~ Eagle Spindle Whorl Collection Fall/ Winter 2020 collection artwork.

MUSIC

Strong Heart and Mind ("kw'am'kw'um' shqwaluwun")

Strong Heart and Mind encourages self care through connection with the ancestors and in having a strong heart and mind. In hul'q'umi'num language, "la'lum'uthut" translates to "looking after self and to be careful", which is especially important during these times of a global pandemic.

This song features Gabriola Guitars Luthier Patrick Olmsted (@olmstedpatrick) on guitar and our Father William Good playing the heartbeat on the drum, along with us (Sophia and Aunalee) on vocals, hand drum and rattle.
